FALL PROGRAMS from Rabbi Gordon

ISRAEL TRIP
Our congregational trip with Kayla Ship and KESHET educational journeys has been postponed to the spring.  We are now planning a trip from May 23 to June 4.  Stay tuned.

SPEAKERS SERIES
In August we began year two of our collaborative program with Northeastern University’s Jewish Studies department and our Adult Education Committee.

On Monday, August 31  Professor of History, Simon Rabinovitch spoke about  “Finding Home: A History of the Jews of Boston”

On Saturday, September 12  at 9:00 p.m. , as an introduction to our Selichot service, Professor of Journalism, Jonathan Kaufman will talk about “Blacks and Jews: Can the Alliance be Rebuilt.”  We will be joined that evening by Shirat Hayam of Swampscott,  Beth Shalom of Blue Hills, Temple Beth Emunah of Easton and Ahavath Torah of Stoughton.

Finally, on Friday, October 16  8 p.m. (after Friday night service beginning at 7 p.m.) Professor of Political Science Bill Miles will give a talk postponed from last spring on “The Rabbi of Timbuktu”

All three talks will deal with different aspects of the relations between Blacks and Jews in Boston, in America and in Africa.

RABBI’S ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES
MONDAYS  --  Lunch and Study with Rabbi Gordon at noon, starting on September 14th.

TUESDAYS --  In collaboration with Hebrew College and Temple Israel of Sharon we are hosting a MEAH Bible class taught by Rabbi Gordon,  semester one of a two year curriculum.  Classes begin on October 20th and will be held on eleven Tuesdays starting  on October 20.  For details and to register e-mail mstern@hebrewcollege.edu.   Generous financial aid is available.

WEDNESDAYS –- Wine, Cheese and Study with Rabbi Gordon at 8:00 p.m. starting on September 2.
The Monday noon, and Wednesday evening classes will cover a variety of topics including preparing for the High Holidays, History of Israel, and a class on the idea of God in Judaism.  Class input on topics will be welcome and the class continues throughout the year.

NOTE:  Additional classes will be taught by Cantor Grossman, Marvin Wolfert and others.   We were discussing  classes in prayer book and modern Hebrew and synagogue skills (leading prayer services, reading torah and chanting haftorah).

FOR YOUNGER STUDENTS

I will also be reading stories to our youngest children on every other Sunday morning at 10:30.  We are also planning outreach to our teens and college students.  Please encourage students to be in touch and send me the names, colleges and e-mails of your college students so I can be in touch with them.

PREPARING FOR THE HIGH HOLIDAYS
During the remainder of August I will be focusing on preparing for the Holidays in my sermons and teaching.  I strongly recommend Rabbi Alan Lew’s book, THIS IS REAL AND YOU ARE COMPLETELY UNPREPARED: THE DAYS OF AWE AS A JOURNEY OF TRANSFORMATION as a guide.
