Going forward, we will have hybrid (in-person and streaming) Shabbat Morning Services.  If you come in-person, we ask that you sign up to come to services by Thursday morning. 
You can sign up for multiple weeks all at once or
You can do it on a week to week basis.

Jewish Storytelling from Rebbe Nachman to the Coen Brothers

The Hasidic revolution involved a return from Judaism’s longtime focus on law (halacha) to the Jewish storytelling (aggadic) tradition. Hasidic stories range from fairy tales about lost princesses to stories of wonder-working rabbis. How did the medium impact the message? Why stories? How does this tradition continue in new forms today? Our class will conclude with watching the Coen brother’s film, A Serious Man (2009).   All readings will be distributed in class and on line. No prior knowledge assumed.

The Moral Thinking Behind Jewish Law (Halakhah)
Starting with the Mishnah (220 C.E.), our class will read classics of Jewish Law, asking what ethical ideals underpin specific legal rulings.  All texts will be read in English; no prior experience assumed.  Texts will be screen shared in class.

Family Havdalah and Bedtime stories. Join our religious school families as we say goodbye to Shabbat and welcome the new week. 
We will create all the items needed for you to celebrate your own family Havdalah. Have the kids come in their pajamas as we will read a bedtime story before having our own Havdalah service. All families, grandparents, and friends with children 12 and younger are encouraged to attend. No rsvp required. Your text goes here!

Join us for B’nai Tikvah’s Social Action Shabbat on November 20th, Transgender Day of Remembrance, to meet (virtually) renowned author, teacher, and speaker, Joy Ladin. Through reading some of the best known Torah stories through the lens of transgender experience, Joy explores fundamental questions about how religious texts, traditions, and the understanding of G-d can be enriched by transgender perspectives, and how the Torah and trans lives can illuminate one another.
Drawing on her own experience Ladin shows how the Torah speaks both to practical transgender concerns such as marginalization, and to the challenges of living without a body or social role that is clear to others…..challenges that can help us understand a G-d who defies all human categories.

The following is a reading that will be presented on November 20th at the Social Action Committee's Transgender Day Shabbat. The prayer remembers those who have died by violence, and prays for an end to hatred.

God, full of mercy, bless the souls of all who are in our hearts on this Transgender Day of Remembrance. We call to mind today young and old, of every race, faith, and gender experience who have died by violence. We remember those who have died because they would not hide, or did not pass, or did pass, or stood too proud. Today we name them: the reluctant activist, the fiery hurler of heels, the warrior for quiet truth, the one whom no one really knew. As many as we can name, there are thousands more whom we cannot, and for whom no Kaddish may have been said. We mourn their senseless deaths, and give thanks for their lives, for their teachings, and for the brief glow of each holy flame. We pray for the strength to carry on their legacy of vision, bravery, and love. And as we remember them, we remember with them the thousands more who have taken their own lives. We pray for resolve to root out the injustice, ignorance, and cruelty that grow despair. We pray, God, that those who perpetrate hate and violence will speedily come to understand that Your creation has many faces, many genders, and many holy expressions. Blessed are they who have allowed their divine image to shine in the world. Blessed are You, God, in whom no light is extinguished.

Learn to Read Hebrew in 5 Easy Sessions
In conjunction with NJOP’s read Hebrew America/Canada program, B’nai Tikvah will be offering Hebrew Reading Crash Course, Level I. The course consists of five 90 minute classes to be held on consecutive Wednesday mornings, at 10:30am, beginning November 3, 2021. The classes will be taught by Heidi Wortzman. Location to be decided based on the Covid situation, with the possibility of either in-person or zoom classes.
Registration is ongoing.

Minyan List for the Week of November 1

Congregants commemorating a yahrzeit may wish to honor that event by leading some portion of the evening’s service. It might be as small as leading a prayer or could be leading all of Mincha or Ma’ariv. If you are interested in taking this honor feel free to call Joe Doniger at 781-910-7601 or email us at  MinyanRangers@bnaitikvahma.org  at least two days in advance, and we’ll help make arrangements with that night’s minyan leader. Due to the pandemic, as many people are observing a virtual Shiva week, if you inform the leader, a third Mourners' Kaddish will be included as is done in a shiva house.
