6:00 PM - 7:30 PMSocial HallJoin B’nai Tikvah to watch “All We Carry,” the intimate story of one family, while humanizing one of the most divisive issues of our time: immigration. The film follows Magdiel, Mirna, and their young son, Joshua—as they flee targeted cartel violence in Honduras on foot and ride in cargo trains across Mexico, claim asylum at the US border, and endure detention before being released to live with extended family in Seattle, Washington. After two months living in Seattle, the young family’s fortune suddenly changes when a West Seattle synagogue offers to sponsor them for the two years leading up to their final asylum date. As the family forms bonds in their new community they learn about the synagogue’s members’ own history of persecution and migration. After living in a state of limbo for two years, Magdiel and Mirna have their long-awaited court appearance and receive a decision on their case. As they share the news with the community who embraced them, we witness the powerful ending to their search for home. The three extraordinary years in Magdiel and Mirna's lives that we watch unfold on screen show a love story full of joy and grief in equal measure.

What are we talking about when we talk about "Israel"? The name "Israel" in Jewish texts can have many meanings: the person, the nation, the land, and the modern state. In this six-session class, we will be examining different uses of the name "Israel" by looking at sources ranging from the Torah to modern thinkers. Together, we will gain deeper understanding into its meaning by looking at the connections between and teasing apart the differences among the range of meanings of the word, and be able to discern what we are talking about when we talk about Israel. -

In this six-week course, we will examine six women who lived in the time of the Talmud, whom the rabbis labeled as a shrew, a primadonna, a black widow, and so on. But was that all that they were? Was that all the rabbis thought of them? Or is there more to the story, hidden in the margins? Based on the acclaimed work of scholar GIla Fine, we will uncover the secret lives of these six remarkable women. -
