Kabbalat Shabbat: Starting Over
We start new cycles this shabbat. With the fall holidays behind us we begin the torah afresh from the story of creation. This Friday night we will reflect on new beginnings and what Genesis chapter one teaches us about how to be creative. Our Friday night service is on Zoom, beginning at 6:00 p.m. and concluding around 7:00 p.m. Reb Josh will lead the davening and I will offer the dvar torah.
Our service is designed to create a buffer between the work week and Shabbat rest. We aim to make the atmosphere like a family shabbat table complete with Candle Lighting, Blessing one another, Kiddush, Motzei and Angel Cards. Before and after the service we take time to check in with one another and share greetings (feel free to log on early). Our service has been abridged for ZOOM but includes familiar and new melodies, readings from the margins of the siddur, and some learning.
Our service begins at 10 a.m. in our sanctuary (and sitting in our new, comfortable, chairs). Reb Josh will be leading the davening. Nancy Swartz will be out teacher. Parshat Bereshit is a special reading for Nancy whose book, IN OUR IMAGE, emerged out of her reflections on this reading. Sam Evans will reprise his torah reading from Simchat Torah. You can also join us on LiveControl or YouTube (links below).
Next shabbat we celebrate Olivia Feldman becoming a bat mitzvah.
Please note: Going forward, Starbucks Shabbat will begin at 9am,
My fall lunch and learn begins on Tuesday, November 1. Our first topic is to compare texts on inclusivity and exclusivity in Judaism. Following up on my sermon from Kol Nidre, we will ask how Judaism holds conflicting perspectives on central issues and how we are to navigate that complexity. Who stood at Sinai? Class will be on Zoom.
Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Leonard Gordon
