Kabbalat Shabbat: Truthtelling in our Torah reading
Our Friday night service begins at 6:00 p.m. and concludes around 7:00 p.m. Join us on ZOOM and log in early to say hello. Our service includes Candle lighting, blessing one another, kiddush, motzei and angel cards as we prepare to move from the work week to Shabbat as a day of rest and reflection.
This week we read the story of Jacob, our beloved ancestor who was also a notorious trickster. When is tricking someone (lying?) justified? We will share examples where Judaism affirms going beyond a simple statement that telling the truth is always the best way to go. Reb Josh will lead the davening.
Last week, Reb Josh spoke about an “embodied Judaism” approach to the opening parts of our shabbat morning service which contains prayers for the return of the soul and the gift of the body. What do these prayers tell us about ourselves and about God? Why do some Jewish thinkers come to see the body as a micro-cosmos – a miniature version of all of reality? What about those times in life when the body does not feel like a gift? Reb Lisa and I will explore these questions in our teaching. Reb Lisa will lead the davening.
Davening in the sanctuary begins at 10:00 a.m. and concludes around noon with kiddush luncheon, sponsored by Lisa Yorra along with Lillian Goldberg and Edith Weiner for birthday celebrations. Join us for conversation, study and fellowship, or join us on-line.
Lunch & Learn: Texts on Community Building
My Winter lunch and learn continues this (and every) Tuesday at noon. In coming months we will explore texts on the building of community. What did the early rabbis teach about creating intimate Jewish communities in which the individual is nurtured and the communal is sustained. Class will be on Zoom.
