Kabbalat Shabbat: Revelation and Love
Our Friday night service begins at 6:00 p.m. and concludes around 7:00 p.m. Join us on ZOOM and log in early to say hello. Our service includes Candle lighting, blessing one another, kiddush, motzei and angel cards as we prepare to move from the work week to Shabbat as a day of rest and reflection.
Reb Josh will lead the davening and I will offer our teaching. We often think about how the theme of love runs through our Friday Night Service: Our love for God, God’s soul connection to us, our love for one another. But how was love conveyed at Mt. Sinai along with the 10 Commandments? Can we be commanded to love?
As we continue to hold in-person services in the Sanctuary, we advise wearing a mask and making sure you are current in your booster shots. If you are feeling sick, please stay at home, we will miss you.
Shabbat Morning: First of Four Special Shabbatot;
B’nai Tikvah Sings!
Services this Shabbat morning will be live in the Sanctuary and on Livestream and YouTube. Davening in the sanctuary begins at 10:00 a.m. and concludes around noon with kiddush luncheon. Join us for conversation, study and fellowship, or join us online.
Reb Josh will be leading the davening. Sam Evans will read torah and Marci Shaw will chant the special haftorah for the Sabbath when we remember the annual payment of the shekel tax that took place this time of year in ancient Israel.
In our study, we will look at a difficult text, the law of HEREM, which required the Israelites to wipe our the native inhabitants of the land of Canaan. How has the tradition interpreted and re-interpreted these rules? How can we teach them today?
Special Announcement
B'nai Tikvah will be hosting a Community Family Seder for the second night of Passover. During the service, our clergy will bring informative, interesting, nuanced teachings to enhance the experience for all. Please join us the evening of April 6th as we celebrate together with our friends, their extended family and other community members. All are welcome! REGISTRATION IS OPEN!
Lunch & Learn - Winter: New Topic for the next six weeks:
Finishing a tractate of Mishnah
My Winter lunch and learn continues this week on Wednesday at noon by zoom. New students are always welcome.
In preparation for Passover, I will be studying tractate Hagigah of the Mishnah, concluding that study with the service for the fast of the first born on April 5 at 8:00 a.m. Tractate Hagigah has fascinating material about censorship in teaching, the value of metaphysics in philosophy, and the most central laws of the Torah. Class will be onZOOM.
Shabbat shalom, Rabbi Gordon
