This week, we say farewell to both the Book of Genesis and to 2023. Jacob blesses his children and predicts some parts of their futures, while leaving other parts a total mystery. Is it always better to know what’s in store for us? Our Friday night service begins at 6:00 p.m. and concludes around 6:50 p.m. This week I will lead the davening and share a teaching.
Our service is designed to create a buffer between the work week and Shabbat rest. We aim to make the atmosphere like a family shabbat table complete with Candle Lighting, Blessing one another, Kiddush, and Motzei. Before and after the service we take time to check in with one another and share greetings (feel free to log on early). Our service has been abridged for ZOOM but includes familiar and new melodies, readings from the margins of the siddur, and some learning.
SHABBAT MORNING:
Name that Tribe!
The core of Parshat Vayehi (Gen. 47:28-50:26) is a poem blessing the traits of each of the tribes of Israel. This poem was the inspiration for the carved wood motifs on either side of our ark. On Shabbat morning, we’ll try to identify each of the tribes by their symbols, and learn some of the more colorful stories attached to each.
Our Shabbat morning service begins at 10 a.m. in our sanctuary, and you can join us in person or on Livestream. Marvin Wolfert will read Torah, I will read Haftorah and offer a teaching. Services will conclude around noon and will be followed by a kiddush luncheon. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Lisa Feld

Adult Ed Course with Reb Nikki Thursday, May 8th 8:00p to 9:00p What are we talking about when we talk about "Israel"?
The name "Israel" in Jewish texts can have many meanings: the person, the nation, the land, and the modern state. In this six-session class, we will be examining different uses of the name "Israel" by looking at sources ranging from the Torah to modern thinkers. Together, we will gain deeper understanding into its meaning by looking at the connections between and teasing apart the differences among the range of meanings of the word, and be able to discern what we are talking about when we talk about Israel.
