Our Friday night service begins at 6:00 pm and concludes around 6:50 pm. This week Reb Josh will be leading the davening and Rabbi Gordon will share a teaching.
The Jewish month of Shevat began this past week, and with it the new year of the trees (according to the house of Shamai. The house of Hillel observes the fifteenth of the month, also known as Tu Bishvat). What can this holiday teach us about our relationship with the world we live in?
Our service is designed to create a buffer between the work week and Shabbat rest. We aim to make the atmosphere like a family shabbat table complete with Candle Lighting, Blessing one another, Kiddush, Motzei and Angel Cards. Before and after the service we take time to check in with one another and share greetings (feel free to log on early). Our service has been abridged for ZOOM but includes familiar and new melodies, readings from the margins of the siddur, and some learning.
In Parashat Bo we read about the last of the plagues visited upon Egypt, the events of the first Passover, and the beginning of Israel’s march to freedom. While the children of Israel left in a hurry, we are also told that they brought all their property with them, along with objects of silver and gold and clothing from their Egyptian neighbors. Were these spoils restitution for slavery? Were they enough to compensate for four hundred and thirty years of free labor? How do we think about repayment of such a debt?
This shabbat Reb Josh will lead the davening and Rabbi Gordon will offer the teaching. Lillian Goldberg and Reb Josh will be our Torah readers, and Marvin Wolfert will read Haftorah. Davening in the sanctuary begins at 10:00 a.m. and concludes around noon with kiddush luncheon. Join us for conversation, study and fellowship, or join us on-line.
