Shabbat Morning: Parshat Ki Tissa: What is an Idol?
Services for this week will be in person and on livestream and begin at 10:00 a.m. This shabbat we read Ki Tissa, a parashah that includes the story of the Golden Calf. After experiencing the miracle of liberation and moment of revelation on Mt. Sinai, the children of Israel do not know how to respond when Moses leaves the camp for the mountain top. Aaron delays, but does not prevent them from building and worshiping a Golden Calf. What does this story tell us about a human need to worship something concrete and visible? The role of ecstasy in worship? The ongoing problem of defining and avoiding idol worship? Are there idols in our world and in our lives? What does it mean to place something else above our desire to connect with the one, invisible, God of creation? And what do we think of Aaron’s choice: to stay with the people and moderate, rather than condemn, their impulses?
Join B'nai Tikvah's Soul Stroll THIS Saturday, February 12, to discuss Parshat Tetzaveh. We'll meet at 10:00 am at the Houghton's Pond parking lot, at 880 Hillside St., Milton, MA, for an easy 1.2 mile stroll. For information contact Janice Halpern. Soul Stroll
