Entering the Gates of Repentance
Kabbalat Shabbat
Our Friday night service begins at 6:00 p.m. and concludes around 6:50 p.m. This week Marc Silver will be leading the davening. We will continue our discussion of the season of repentance. How can we help one another? When should we point out the flaws of another? How can we make a difference?
Our service is designed to create a buffer between the work week and Shabbat rest. We aim to make the atmosphere like a family shabbat table complete with Candle Lighting, Blessing one another, Kiddush, Motzei and Angel Cards. Before and after the service we take time to check in with one another and share greetings (feel free to log on early). Our service has been abridged for ZOOM but includes familiar and new melodies, readings from the margins of the siddur, and some learning.
Our service begins at 10 a.m. in our sanctuary (and sitting in our new, comfortable, chairs). Services conclude around noon and are following by kiddush luncheon. You can also join us on live stream (see the links below).
This week we read Parshat Ki Tetze, a single section of torah that has no fewer than 72 commandments, starting with rules for the treatment of captives in warfare. Noah Ben Aharon will read torah. Janice Halpern will chant the haftorah (reading from the 5 th and 3 rd haftaroth of consolation). Sam Evans will lead the davening.
Our study will look at the sin most frequently mentioned in the Al Chet (the confessional for Yom Kippur), LASHON HARA, evil speech. Does speech need to be derogatory to be evil? How should supervisors talk about 3 rd parties without violating the prohibition against speaking about others? How serious a violation is Lashon Hara? How can we avoid it? How should we respond when we hear others speaking Lashon Hara?
Shabbat shalom, Rabbi Leonard Gordon
