Parshat Tetzaveh Shabbat Morning: The language of Prayer
Services for this week will be in person and on livestream and begin at 10:00 a.m. Last shabbat we learned about trope, the musical system that enhances our reading of the torah and haftorah readings. Trope is the first line of interpretation and guides us in understanding the meaning of the Hebrew. We also experienced “transtropilation,” using trope with the English translation of the Biblical text. We continue that discussion this shabbat with a teaching about the appropriate languages used in prayer. Which prayers can be recited in any language the praying individual understands and which prayers can only be recited in Hebrew? When is Aramaic a preferred language and when is it forbidden? How can praying in English enhance our experience of the siddur and when is using English a block to a deeper experience of our liturgy? In the end we are asking about the meaning of prayer itself. Join us for the learning and conversation.
From now on, the Monday lunch and learn will be on ZOOM only. New students are always welcome.
