Our service is on ZOOM and begins at 6:00 p.m. Join us for candle lighting, blessing one another, kiddush, motzei and invoking an angel to bless us during the week ahead. This past week started with a blizzard, but more importantly our community has recently absorbed a range of incidents of anti-semitism, ignorance and attacks on the State of Israel. Locally, 22 swastikas were found in dorms and offices at Curry College in Milton. Nationally, a TV personality spoke ignorantly about the Holocaust and race, and an international human rights organization produced a report seeing apartheid at the core of the State of Israel from 1948. The report ignored the history of racial anti-semitism that necessitated the creation of a majority Jewish state. As we enter Shabbat, we reflect on the week that has past. How can we do our part to educate ourselves, our young people, and our neighbors about Jewish identity, the story of modern Zionism, and the horrors of the Holocaust? We also remember that we are the months of Adar (I and II), the season of the year when we are enjoined to celebrate (“when Adar begins, joy increases”). We will continue to mark our birthdays, anniversaries and other joyous moments on Friday nights. Zoom Link Meeting Id: 978 470 037 Passcode: 183618
Parshat Terumah Shabbat Morning: What is “transtropilation”?
Services for this week will be in person and on livestream and begin at 10:00 a.m. A few months ago Sam Evans and I discussed “transtropilation,” the use of traditional trope (torah reading melodies) to the English translation of the biblical portion. Did our ancestors ever read Torah in the synagogue in a language other than Hebrew? What was the role of translation in the ancient synagogue service? How does trope impact our understanding of the text? Is trope really the first layer of biblical commentary? Sam Evans and Hebrew College Rabbinic Intern Lisa Feld will teach us about the history of torah reading and translation, and demonstrate the contemporary style of adding trope to the English text. Join us and learn about this central part of the shabbat morning service. Carol Turkewitz will chant from this week’s haftorah
From now on, the Monday lunch and learn will be on ZOOM only. New students are always welcome.
