Among the donations to build the Tabernacle were some odd items: women’s mirrors. Why were these mirrors given a place of honor? Are mirrors a symbol of vanity, a tool for building self-esteem, or something else entirely? Our Friday night service begins at 6:00 p.m. and concludes around 6:50 p.m. This week Reb Lisa will lead the davening and share a teaching.
Our service is designed to create a buffer between the work week and Shabbat rest. We aim to make the atmosphere like a family shabbat table complete with Candle Lighting, Blessing one another, Kiddush, Motzei and Angel Cards. Before and after the service we take time to check in with one another and share greetings (feel free to log on early). Our service has been abridged for ZOOM but includes familiar and new melodies, readings from the margins of the siddur, and some learning. Join us on ZOOM.
As we continue to hold in-person services in the Sanctuary, we advise wearing a mask and making sure you are current in your booster shots. If you are feeling sick, please stay at home, we will miss you.
Shabbat Morning: Giving
Parshat Ki Tissa begins with the command that soldiers donate a half-shekel coin when they are called up to serve. What are the hidden meanings of this act of giving? What is the impact of charity on the one who donates? This week is also Parshat Parah, one of the special readings leading up to Passover, in which we learn about the ritual of the red heifer.
Our service begins at 10 a.m. in our sanctuary. Reb Lisa will lead the davening and Nancy Swartz will offer the teaching. Noah Beit-Aharon will be our Torah reader and will also read the special maftir for this week. Marci Shaw will read Haftorah. Services conclude around noon, and are followed by kiddush luncheon. You can also join us on Livestream and YouTube.
Friday Night Live!
Mark your calendar, and join us in person (also on Livestream and YouTube), for a special Friday Night Live! March 17, 6 pm with Cantorial Soloist Jodi Blankstein, and accompanist, Adam Dehner enhancing our service with melodies modern and traditional, and a program filled with songs of resilience, renewal and HOPE. The service will be followed by a delicious chicken dinner in the social hall. *Dinner RSVP and payment required by March 14th
Getting Ready For Passover
Hametz sale and Feast of Freedom Haggadot
Many Jews practice the custom of appointing their rabbi to sell their Hametz for the duration of Passover, and B’nai Tikvah is proud to uphold this tradition. If you wish to sell your Hametz, please either fill out the online form or download a PDF form. It is also customary to make a gift to the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund in gratitude. Both the form and donation may be completed online or printed and brought/mailed to the office. The deadline is April 4th.
We also have 35 copies of the Feast of Freedom Haggadah available in the office. Take as many as you need, first come, first serve.
Community Family Seder
B'nai Tikvah will be hosting a Community Family Seder for the second night of Passover. During the service, our clergy will bring informative, interesting, nuanced teachings to enhance the experience for all. Please join us the evening of April 6th as we celebrate together with our friends, their extended family and other community members. All are welcome! REGISTRATION IS OPEN!
Lunch & Learn:
Finishing a tractate of Mishnah
Rabbi Gordon’s Winter lunch and learn continues this week on Wednesday at noon by zoom. New students are always welcome.
In preparation for Passover, the rabbi will be studying tractate Hagigah of the Mishnah, concluding that study with the service for the fast of the first born on April 5 at 8:00 a.m. Tractate Hagigah has fascinating material about censorship in teaching, the value of metaphysics in philosophy, and the most central laws of the Torah. Class will be onZOOM.
